Did you know…?

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are wide-ranging apex predators capable of crossing entire ocean basins, with satellite tagging studies showing migrations of thousands of kilometers across open ocean. They inhabit tropical and subtropical waters worldwide and play a crucial role at the top of the marine food chain.

While highly migratory, tiger sharks remain present year-round in certain hotspots such as Fuvahmulah (Maldives). The island’s unique geography — a single-island atoll with no surrounding reef — provides direct access to deep pelagic waters, creating ideal conditions for year-round encounters with large, open-ocean predators.

Easily recognized by the dark vertical stripes visible in juveniles, these markings provide camouflage in shallow, dappled light and gradually fade with age. Tiger sharks are known for their slow, powerful swimming style and calm, curious behavior, often allowing for long and controlled underwater encounters.

As ecological “generalists,” tiger sharks have one of the broadest diets of any shark species, preying on fish, rays, turtles, and occasionally marine mammals. This versatility helps regulate marine populations and maintain ecosystem balance. Growing over 4 meters in length and weighing up to 900 kg, tiger sharks are among the largest predatory sharks on the planet.
